FIELD NOTES / MELTY MASHUPS

Choose a Melty Mashup by the Games You Own

A Portal label need not mean a Portal purchase. Match your library to the release’s actual requirements, then choose the world you want to spend time in—not just the crossover name that sounds best.

Match your library to a playable idea

Use this shortlist to decide which entry deserves a closer look before installing or shopping. The requirements and interactions below are the creators’ descriptions on the linked Melty releases, not installation or performance results from this directory. A matching pair makes an entry a candidate; it does not establish compatibility with your particular PC.

Separate inspiration from a companion installation

The directory’s game filters describe connections, not a universal shopping list. Portalcraft’s creator credits Portal as inspiration and says the project uses its own art and Minecraft sounds. PortalPeak’s creator instead says the gun visuals and sounds come from your installed Portal 2 copy. Those are different dependency models even though both promise portals.

A companion game can be necessary without supplying a second running campaign. Terraria+Peak names PEAK as the host and Terraria as the installed source for sprites, sounds and music. Silksong: Cuphead Edition similarly reads Cuphead material locally while keeping Silksong’s setting and interactions. Do not buy a companion expecting its entire world to appear alongside the host.

Melty’s terms require legitimate copies of the games a mashup uses; a free mashup is not a game licence. When a requirement is unclear, keep the entry off your purchase list until the creator’s current instructions explain the needed edition and files.

If several pairs fit, choose the world first

Already own several Minecraft companions? Decide whether you want to inhabit Skyrim, the Lands Between or Subnautica’s ocean, or keep Minecraft’s survival world and change its combat through UltraCraft. A familiar mechanic is less useful as a tie-breaker than the environment you actually want to explore.

For a PEAK library, pick the change to the climb: Terraria+Peak adds themed encounters, PortalPeak changes traversal, and Peak Quota adds cargo pressure. These are alternatives for different session goals, not a quality ranking or a recommendation to buy every companion. Peak Quota’s author calls the release a draft; PortalPeak’s author says full-group co-op has not been tested. Neither belongs on a shortlist that requires established group play just because you own the pair.

Keep file-specific combinations off an impulse-buy list

Skate Warfare is a useful exception to judging by game tags. Its creator requires your own Modern Warfare 2 (2009) PC installation, while skating is optional and needs a controller plus an extracted Xbox 360 Skate 3 copy. An ISO is not the stated usable format. Choose it for skating only if you can satisfy those file requirements legitimately—not merely because Skate 3 appears in your purchase history.

ER Mario’s listing describes a supported US Mario ROM alongside specific Steam Elden Ring executable requirements. The Elden Ring + Super Mario 64 label alone therefore does not establish that your Mario edition or files fit. Do not buy an arbitrary edition on the assumption that ownership and usable package inputs are the same thing.

Once you have a candidate, open its directory entry and follow View on Melty to check the current release. A Java-versus-other-edition mismatch, a different storefront or an unusable companion format is a reason to choose another entry—not to add more games to the cart and hope.
